Paw-some Artists
Every day, our keepers strive to provide the best quality of life for the animals in their care by including exciting, challenging, and enjoyable activities like painting in their routine. Many of our animals, including African painted dogs, maned wolves, and foxes have become true artists and create stunning, one-of-a-kind paintings.
To create these works of art, our keepers begin with small dabs of colorful, non-toxic paint on a canvas. After being instructed to present their paws to the keepers, the animals create their own unique designs by swiping their "paw-brushes" through the paint. The artists even add natural elements like leaves, dirt, and rocks! Each painting is completely original and comes with a certificate of authenticity and an Endangered Wolf Center plaque.
Why Do We Paint with Our Animals?
These animals' talents were achieved through fun, positive reinforcement training that teaches new types of behaviors through a reward system.
Activities like painting allow our keepers to encourage our animals to participate in their own veterinary care. For instance, presenting a paw is the first step towards training a voluntary blood draw and allows keepers a closer look at their paws to ensure they are healthy.
The paintings are also a great way to raise awareness and funds that directly help support our conservation efforts for the endangered wolves we house.
